Australia is the sixth largest country of the world, with a size that would fit in Germany more than 21 times. But only more than 21 million Australians live on the red continent. Most parts, especially the outback, are deserted for hundreds of kilometres. Just a few road houses look a bit lost in that kind of nothing. The east coast of Australia has by far the highest density of population, followed by the south coast. And that is were you find 4 out of the 5 biggest Australian capitals: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Perth is located in the southern part of the west coast. These 4 metropolises of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia could hardly be more diverse.
Sydney is with 4 million inhabitants the biggest city of Australia. And not only this, it is probably the most versatile. The sea seems to flow into the city, and with the legendary Bondi and Manly Beach you can find perfect surf and beach feeling in the heart of the city. The scene of Sydney, especially at night around the places of Darling Harbour is multi-cultural and lively.
And of course, here you can find the worldwide most famous symbol and landmark of Australia, the Opera House. Its unique shapes of the roof stand
out of the skyline of Sydney. The Opera House is not only used for operas, even concerts take place in there. The acoustic inside is brilliant. Loads of people are relaxing with their typical Australian style in front of the Opera House in the cafes and within the Botanical Garden and enjoy the beautiful weather. From there you can also see the Harbour Bridge, which is an important part of the city scenery.
Melbourne is located on the south coast of Australia and has nearly the size of Sydney. The city doesn’t have direct access to the ocean, because it is spread around Port Philippe Bay. That is why you can’t find any surf in Melbourne. But the famous beach of Torquay, where they even do championships, is just an hour drive away.
The face of Melbourne is multi-cultural, more than every town of Australia. From here you can find one of the best productions of music, art, gastronomy, fashion and design. And not to forget… football forever! Australians love to watch football in the stadium. On days of any plays, and those seem to be very often, thousands of people with hats and scarves are celebrating and drinking... party time!
Backpackers and tourists can discover a lot more.
The view on the skyline is best to experience while walking on the Princess Walk along the Yarra River through the city of Melbourne. The skyscrapers and Spire (illuminated at night time) give a stunning view. Flinders Station, the Melbourne Aquarium and the Melbourne Concert Hall are just a few more interesting places. In case you are free from giddiness, you can enjoy the birds view on Melbourne from the Observation Deck. Here, from the top of the city, you can see the beaches of St. Kilda and up to the horizon.
